The Friedman & Friends Education was founded by David Friedman in 1999 when through the college counselor he discovered an overwhelming amount of disadvantaged seniors unable to afford college currently at his children's high school. David reached out to some of his friends to help him raise the funds needed to support the students and in its first year the fund passed out three scholarships. In this way the organization began as a small group of friends eagerly supporting the cause of young disadvantaged students needing the opportunity to get an education so they can better their lives and reach their full potential. Within the first nine years the Friedman & Friends Education Fund has awarded scholarships to over 100 disadvantaged high school seniors.
The financial assistance these students receive will often change the experience they have during their academic career. It reshapes the chances they have by giving them the support they need to move forward. This organization doesn't just provide a one time gift, the scholarship fund provides these students with the opportunity to become apart of an elite population. The chance to change their environment and chose the path they wish to take to build their future. One major difference that sets our organization apart from the others is the additional support we provide aside from the money. According to the students the encouragement, mentoring and caring we provide has a huge impact on their lives.
These students are gifted and many come from disadvantaged backgrounds and poor neighborhoods and are deserving of the chance to earn an education and obtain all the benefits that come with higher learning. The students have the opportunity to receive continuous support for each year they are enrolled and pursuing their undergraduate degree. Along with financial supports students also receive mentoring and guidance or career counseling, and valuable networking opportunities. All of the scholarships are presented at an award dinner where previous students get the opportunity to share with the contributors and current recipients their experiences in college and what the scholarship has meant to them.
